Tim Adams Aberfeldy Shiraz 1995 (review)

78 points

Clare Valley, South Australia.

From a magnum. Dull, devoid of flavour and fruit. I'd suspect it has suffered from cellaring but the wine colour is excellent, structure study, and the bottle fill perfect.

I found this web site where Tim Adams describes 1995 as not a good vintage, and the tasting found the 1995 dried out. Robert Parker is said to have given this wine a high rating in 1998.

I've since had a bit of a think about that last point, ie that Parker gave this wine a rave in 1998. Think what you will of Parker but he isn't an idiot. I have no doubt this wine was pretty impressive back in 98. Which shows, I think, that some young Australian (and at least New World in general) wines can appear in their youth to not only be very good wines but also have all the material for age - that they will probably be better with age. And yet with time they fall away completely. It's something that anyone buying wine to cellar needs to be aware of, and strive to work out ways to spot this.
