Lenswood Semillon 2000

90+

It's too bad Tim Knappstein is no longer making this wine. He had so much problem selling Semillon, that he grafted the vines over to Gewurtztraminer (which is a very nice drop!). This wine has 4+ years of bottle age and has begun the changeover from lemon to a toasty almost oaky flavour. Lots of mouth feel and still some citrus character. It tastes like it was fermented in older oak, rather than the very acid no oak style of Hunter. More akin to a white Bordeaux. Great drinking if you can find it.

I am surprised that he grafted sellion over to gewtztraminer. Personally I like both grapes but the latter is hard work in Australia (most fail). It is such a pity that the market doesn't appreciate semillion, one of the great noble grapes. And meanwhile sauvignon blanc has become the biggest selling white - why ?!

I think TIm KNappstein might have kept a few vines, since he blends a few percent Semillon in his Sauvignon Blanc. Gewurtz is harder to grow and make, but his is nice and has a ready market for the 500 cases or so he makes each year. As to why SB has gorwn so much (Chardonnay is still by far the biggest white), if we knew how to predict or even change fads, we would do it, wouldn't we!!
